Nick Menza, l’ex batterista dei Megadeth, che ha suonato con la formazione thrash metal per circa dieci anni, è morto sabato dopo essere collassato sul palco durante un concerto a Studio City, in California. Aveva 51 anni.
Il management del batterista ha confermato la sua scomparsa con una dichiarazione: “Nick è collassato durante la terza canzone del suo set con la band OHM. Le prime notizie indicano che è stato colpito da un attacco cardiaco e dichiarato morto al suo arrivo in ospedale”.
L’ex chitarrista dei Megadeth, Marty Friedman, che ha suonato con Menza sia nella band che come artista solista, ha ricordato il batterista su Facebook.
Il figlio del sassofonista di Buddy Rich, Don Menza, Nick ha iniziato la sua carriera come turnista prima di essere ingaggiato dall’allora batterista dei Megadeth, Chuck Behler, come tecnico; dopo l’abbandono di Behler, Mustaine ha chiesto a Menza di unirsi ai Megadeth nel 1989.
Menza ha suonato la batteria su quattro album dei Megadeth, tra cui il loro classico del 1990, Rust in Peace, e su Countdown to Extinction del 1992; Menza si è fatto sempre notare sul palco per il modo in cui suonava il suo doppio kit.
La carriera di Menza nei Megadeth è poi finita nel 1998, quando dei problemi al ginocchio e un tumore benigno lo forzarono a lasciare la band durante il tour per Cryptic Writings; Menza fu improvvisamente rimpiazzato dal batterista Jimmy DeGrasso, ex membro dei Suicidal Tendencies che ha anche suonato con Mustaine nel suo side project MD.45.
Dopo i Megadeth, Menza ha suonato in band come i Memorain, gli Orphaned to Hatred e i Deltanaut. Nel 2002, Menza ha pubblicato un album solista intitolato Life After Deth.
Dave Mustaine ha rilasciato una dichiarazione in ricordi di Meza. Il frontman ha scritto che il batterista è “un grande amico, un vero professionista con un’incredibile personalità”.
“Originariamente un tecnico per una band, Nick ha fatto notare in fretta il suo talento e la sua personalità, non ci abbiamo messo molto a realizzare che il suo posto era con noi sul palco, dietro la batteria”, scrive Mustaine. “Abbiamo chiesto a Nick di unirsi ai Megadeth come nostro batterista nel 1989”.

I woke up this morning to a text message from my son, with the news of Nick Menza’s passing. Shocked, devastated, and saddened don’t begin to describe my feelings.
Originally a tech for the band, Nick soon displayed such talent and personality, it didn’t take long for us to realize he belonged onstage with us behind the kit. We asked Nick to join Megadeth as our drummer in 1989. At the time, the band already had its first [gold] album, which only served to stoke the fire. We all wanted world domination, with so much of our lives and dreams ahead of us. As we navigated through the pitfalls of life and the music business, our first album with Nick, Rust in Peace, and subsequent albums Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia, kept up the momentum. We parted ways after Cryptic Writings. We, like all brothers, would disagree at times, but our bond was strong throughout.
As a player, Nick had a very powerful jazzy flair, unpredictable and always entertaining. And, as great a drummer as he was, the time spent with him as a person, a bandmate and a friend was even more fun. There were several times we discussed him coming back to the band, but for various reasons it never came together. We’ve been in touch all along, he had come out to our shows recently and he had remained a great friend, a true professional and a larger than life personality.
The Megadeth family take care of each other, and expect to hear soon about an initiative to help Nick’s children. All of us in this community are connected, take care of yourself and your loved ones.
